New York University Graduate Application

There are a handful of elements that, in many cases, are common across graduate school applications. It’s worth repeating, however, that you should get in touch with your school and program directly to learn exactly what your application requires. Some more common application items include:

  • Letter(s) of Recommendation. Some programs may ask for one, while others may require up to four letters. These letters should come from individuals who know you well and can speak directly about your abilities, accomplishments, and potential.

  • Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement/Personal Essay. This is your opportunity to introduce yourself to the admissions committee. You can explain your academic and professional goals and demonstrate how the program will benefit from having you. The program may provide a specific prompt or ask you to address certain questions.

  • Transcripts and Degrees. You need to provide evidence that you have successfully completed previous academic levels. The specific transcripts and degree(s) required will depend on the graduate or professional program you are applying to. Typically, a bachelor's degree and transcripts from undergraduate institutions are needed for a master's program, while a master's degree and transcripts from graduate institutions may be required for a PhD or other doctoral programs.

  • English Language Proficiency Exam. If you are an international applicant or completed your previous degree at a non-English-speaking institution, you may need to submit scores from an English Language Proficiency Exam (ELPE). There are different ELPEs available, so it's important to contact the graduate admissions office of your program to determine the appropriate exam.

  • Application Fee. The application fee varies depending on the school and program. If you have any questions about the fee, it's best to reach out to the graduate admissions office of your program.

Remember, NYU's reputation as a renowned institution reflects the high standards and expectations it sets for its students. The journey to NYU may be challenging, but it is undoubtedly worth pursuing if you are ready to invest in your academic and personal growth. While NYU may be a highly competitive institution, don't let the challenge deter you from pursuing your dreams. Believe in your abilities, seek support from mentors and advisors, and maintain a strong work ethic on your application preparation.
