All applicants for undergraduate, master's, or professional degree programs must demonstrate sufficient competency in Japanese before being admitted. There isn't a separate faculty at Kyoto University for the study of the Japanese language. You can enroll in a Japanese language program instead to get ready for university admission.

A six-month preparatory course is followed by four years of undergraduate education during the 4.5-year Kyoto iUP program. Since the curriculum offers intensive Japanese language training, prior knowledge of the language is not necessary. In the first two years of Kyoto international undergraduate program, students can take liberal arts classes in either English or Japanese. Moreover, the final two years of the curriculum concentrate on particular courses related to the student's chosen majors and are entirely or mostly taught in Japanese.
