International Mathematics Olympic You Should Join

Participating in competitions or olympiads is one way to build your profile when preparing to apply to your desired university. If you enjoy math or challenging activities, you might want to consider participating in a math olympiad! Here is a list of international math olympiads you can join, where participation can earn you a certificate.

American Mathematics Olympiad (AMO)

The AMO is an international math competition for elementary, middle, and high school students, jointly organized by SIMCC and Southern Illinois University (SIU). The AMO framework is based on the US Common Core Standards.

Olympiad Requirements and Regulations 

The AMO is open to students from Grade 2 to Grade 12. In this Olympiad, the use of calculators is not allowed for Grades 2 through 12.

Implementation System

The AMO is divided into 3 sessions with a total score of 100 points, and there are no point deductions for incorrect answers. The sessions include:

Benefits of Participating in AMO

  1. Scholarships. Participants have the opportunity to receive the Global Scholars Program scholarship.
  2. E-Certificate and Medal. The top 40% of participants will receive an e-certificate and a medal.
  3. Internship Opportunities.
  4. Opportunity to Receive Awards. There are four awards in AMO:
  • Gold Award (8%). Significant Award for International Junior Honor Society (IJHS)
  • Honorable Mention (10%).
  • Silver Award (12%).
  • Bronze Award (20%).
  • Perfect Score Award, for participants who achieve a total score of 100.

    5. All award recipients will receive a direct invitation to the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC).
    6. Ticket to Register for the Singapore Math Global Finals (SMGF). 

Singapore Math Challenge (SMC)

The SMC is a mathematics competition organized by Singa Math. SMC is held as a platform for students to measure their mathematical abilities.

Olympiad Requirements and Regulations 

The SMC is open to students from Grade 1 to Grade 11. Since this competition is usually held in September, students are allowed to participate in a grade level below their actual grade due to the new school year typically just starting.

Students from Primary 1 to Primary 4 are not allowed to use calculators. However, students from Primary 5 to Secondary 4/5 are permitted to use calculators.

Implementation System

SMC is divided into 3 sessions with a total time of 90 minutes to complete and a total score of 100 points. The sessions are as follows:

  • Perfect Score Award, for participants who achieve a total score of 100.

    3. All award recipients will receive a direct invitation to participate in the Singapore Math Global Finals (SMGF).

Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO)

The SASMO is one of the largest mathematics olympiads in Asia. SASMO aims to develop students' untapped thinking potential. Their participation in SASMO will help improve their mathematical skills in school as well as their higher-order thinking skills (HOTS).

Olympiad Requirements and Regulations

SASMO is open to students from Primary 1 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4, and Junior College 1 and 2. The total duration for completing the questions is 90 minutes.

Implementation System

SASMO is divided into 2 sessions with a total score of 85 points. The sessions are as follows:

    2. Opportunity to Receive Awards. There are 5 awards in AMO:
  • Gold Award (8%). Significant Award for IJHS
  • Silver Award (12%).
  • Bronze Award (20%).
  • Perfect Score Award, for participants who achieve a total score of 100. Participants with a Perfect Score Award will also receive a $100 voucher.

    3. Ticket to Register for the Singapore Math Global Finals (SMGF).
