Princeton University Background

Princeton University Notable Alumni

Jeff Bezos

Known as the founder of the world's biggest online retailer, Amazon, Jeff Bezos has become one of the most successful and richest Princeton alumni, with a net worth of around US$182 billion.

Born in New Mexico in 1964, Bezos had his heart set on becoming a theoretical physicist. To turn his dream into reality, he enrolled at Princeton as a physics major before changing his degree to computer science and electrical engineering.

After graduating from Princeton in 1986, Bezos found out that the internet was expanding by 2,300% annually. This inspired him to launch Amazon in 1995. Moreover, his successful business ventures include The Washington Post, Blue Origin, and Whole Foods. These have made him a regular on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world.

Michelle Obama

Former First Lady Michelle Obama was inspired to follow her brother to Princeton University, which she entered in 1981. Furthermore, with a major in sociology and a minor in African-American studies, Mrs. Obama graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985. Also, in her 99-page final thesis, "Princeton Educated Blacks and the Black Community," Mrs. Obama criticized the racial environment on campus and emphasized that she often felt like a visitor on campus.

Before entering the White House, Michelle Obama held positions as a lawyer, a city administrator in Chicago, and a community organizer. Furthermore, as First Lady of the United States, she has acted as a role model for women and a social activist on issues including education, poverty, and healthy living. In 2018, she published her autobiography, Becoming, in which she talks about the experiences that shaped her early years in Chicago, all the way to her time living in the White House.

Woodrow Wilson

Before taking office as president of the United States, Woodrow Wilson was the president of Princeton University, his alma mater. Wilson, who studied history at Princeton, was ranked 38th out of 167 in the Class of 1879.

During his time at Princeton, Wilson was the managing director of the Daily Princetonian (the school newspaper). He also organized a student discussion club on public affairs. After graduation, he went to the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins University. This is before taking the role of the governor of New Jersey.

As the 8th president of the United States from 1913 to 1921, Wilson changed the nation's economic policies and led the United States in the First World War. He was also best known as the leading architect of the League of Nations and the national “self-determination” principle.
