Kyoto University, at a Glance
Kyoto University was established on 18 June 1897 as the second university established in Japan. Moreover, it is located in the historic city of Kyoto, famously known as Japan's hub of culture and technology. Furthermore, it was within an era of rapid growth in culture, technology, and industry that Kyoto University was established.
To this day, the university is famous throughout Japan and around the world for its unique culture of academic freedom and for being at the forefront of cutting-edge research. Moreover, Kyoto University is made up of 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools, and 13 research institutions.
Kyoto University currently houses 22,600 students, with 9,600 students taking their graduate studies and 13,000 students pursuing their bachelor's degrees. When it comes to international students, there are about 2,715 enrolled at Kyoto University.
Kyoto University Scholarship #1: Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships
The first Kyoto University scholarship is the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship. Furthermore, this scholarship gains its funding from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology. This scholarship is available for international students who are:
- Pursuing their undergraduate studies
- Research students (graduate-degree students and non-degree students)
To be eligible for the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
Undergraduate students
- At least 17 and under 24 years of age
- Have graduated, or expect to graduate, from a secondary school or equivalent
Research students
- Under 34 years of age
- Have graduated, or expect to graduate, from an undergraduate or higher degree program
What does the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship cover?
Undergraduate students
- Monthly stipend of 117,000 Yen
- Full coverage of tuition fees (including examination and admission fees)
- One round-trip ticket
Research students
- Monthly stipend of 143,000 Yen for non-degree students and 144,000 Yen for master's and professional degree students
- Full coverage of tuition fees (including examination and admission fees)
- One round-trip ticket
The application period for undergraduate students is in April - May, and late December to January for research students.
Kyoto University Scholarship #2: AEON Scholarship
Another Kyoto University scholarship is the AEON Scholarship, which is an allowance-based scholarship for university students. Also, the scholarship program, which is for students in several Asian nations, was established in 2006 with the hope that awardees would actively contribute to their respective specialist fields in the future.
To be eligible for the AEON Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a student from China (including Hong Kong), Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, or Bangladesh majoring in any subject other than religion or politics
- Undergraduate students - Under 30 years of age
- Master's students - Under 35 years of age
What does the AEON Scholarship cover?
Undergraduate students
- Monthly stipend of 100,000 Yen
- Full coverage of tuition fees with a maximum of 4 years
Master's students
- Monthly stipend of 100,000 Yen
- Full coverage of tuition fees with a maximum of 2 years
