With the job market changing almost every day, have you figured out what career you'd like to pursue? Luckily, internships are here not only to give you a glimpse of the professional world but also to explore different career paths and skills. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of having internship experience!

What is an internship?

An internship is a professional learning opportunity where you can gain hands-on experience and develop specific skills in a certain industry. Internships usually last for a semester, summer break, or school year.

Why is it important to gain internship experience?

Figure out what works for you - Working and living the life of a professional allows you to understand more about yourself while also helping you decide if a particular line of work is a good fit for your lifestyle, goals, and the type of work you enjoy. In this way, you can save time and money on training for a profession that doesn't suit you.

Gain professional skills - No matter what industry your internship is in, you'll develop skills like communication, teamwork, and time management, which can be applied to other fields.

Build confidence - The transition from the classroom to the workplace may fill you with anxiety and fear. However, the excitement of completing your internship can inspire you to step outside of your comfort zone and take on new challenges.

Establish a professional network - Having a professional network can open the doors to future opportunities. Connections can go a long way, from helping you to make well-informed decisions for your career to getting job opportunities.

Stand out - Whether you're applying for university admission or a job offer, internship experience gives you an edge as they illustrate your leadership, work ethic, and dedication in your field of interest. According to a study conducted by Internships.com and Millennial Branding, 89% of companies surveyed stated high school students with internship experience have a competitive edge compared to those who don't.

Where to start?

Ask yourself - Firstly, before entering the workforce, find out where your interests lie or what field of study you find engaging. Make a list of the subjects in which you excel or enjoy and the activities you participate most in.

Build a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or résumé - If you think CVs or résumés are for experienced professionals, it's not! As a high school student, you can start working on your CV or résumé to apply for internships. Make a list of your achievements, remarkable projects, or even experiences. If you have no work experience yet, highlight your involvement in clubs, the student body, or a sports team.

Do your research - Search for companies or organizations that work in a similar field of your interests. You can also reach out to families, friends, or relatives for internship suggestions based on your interests.

Even if it's not in the industry you want to work in, try to seize every opportunity to do an internship. Bear in mind, an internship experience is an investment for your future success!
