Most companies have a department called the Human Resources Development Department. Moreover, it is the department that helps employees develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities to improve an organization's effectiveness. In this article, we will look at how this department helps organizations reach their goals!

What is Human Resource Development?

Human Resource Development, also known as HRD, is responsible for managing the growth of employees' hard and soft skills, knowledge, ability, and talents. Furthermore, Human Resource Development can be defined as organized learning activities. Moreover, They are carried out within a company to enhance performance and foster personal development to achieve self-fulfillment and help the organization accomplish its goals.

The HRD Department's activities are important to develop a highly productive and superior workforce while also reducing turnover rates. Their scope includes:

  • Employee training
  • Career development
  • Performance management and development
  • Coaching
  • Mentoring
  • Tuition assistance

Human Resource Development usually takes into account the needs of an organization to create measurable changes and improvements. Their implementation can be divided into two groups:

1. Informal learning

Informal learning involves seeking out individuals with higher levels of skill and knowledge to learn from them. Moreover, this usually happens spontaneously and without a particular purpose in mind. Furthermore, an example of informal learning comes from sharing experiences over a cup of coffee. Also, through the exchange of work-related stories, workers can learn from each other's experiences. Another example is when new employees are faced with difficult or unusual tasks that require collaboration with highly trained colleagues.

2. Formal learning

Formal learning has relation with professional courses, typically within a classroom where expert trainers, mentors, and instructors impart knowledge to learners while following a particular curriculum. Lectures, practical projects, corporate training workshops, tutorials, and professional seminars are a few examples of formal learning.

Duties of Human Resource Development

The task of Human Resource Development varies based on the size of the company, the sector it operates in, the number of employees, and the company's objectives. Moreover, the general responsibilities of Human Resource Development in a company include:

1. Strategic talent acquisition

To ensure the best talents enter a company's workforce, there needs to be a selection process. Furthermore, this is where Human Resource Development comes into play, covering the stages of preparation, recruitment, and selection.

One of their duties includes attracting people to work for the company and selecting the right candidates. Furthermore, they may talk to a department manager or supervisor to learn about a vacant position, along with its requirements and ideal candidate qualities. They may later set forth a recruiting strategy, including creating internal and external job postings, screening incoming applicants' resumes and other application materials, and conducting interviews.

2. Developing training and development plans

To retain talent and remain competitive, Human Resource Development is responsible for designing employee development plans. Moreover, this could involve providing employees with on-the-job training, professional development programs, or peer-learning opportunities to promote growth and development in the company's workforce. In doing so, aside from boosting employee productivity and reducing turnover rates, the development and training plans may also raise employees' job satisfaction.

From hiring to development, the Human Resources Department is an integral part of organizations. Furthermore, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the employment outlook for human resources managers will increase by 9% between 2020 and 2030. So, are you interested in becoming one?
