Types of AAS Awards

The Australia Awards Scholarships offer Indonesian citizens a pathway to obtaining a Masters or a PhD/Doctorate degree from an Australian university, providing a unique opportunity for advanced education and professional development.

Masters Degree

The scholarship supports Masters degrees up to two years, accommodating various study modes:

  • Coursework: Structured classes and assignments.

  • Research: For applicants needing advanced research skills for roles in teaching, research, or supervision upon return.

  • Combination: A mix of coursework and independent research.

Applicants aiming for a research-focused Masters must demonstrate their research intent and secure an appropriate supervisor, highlighting past research achievements. Double Masters degrees are allowed if completed within two years and included in the original offer.

PhD/Doctorate Degree

PhD scholarships, lasting up to four years, are intended for those expected to occupy senior positions in academia or research institutions in Indonesia. Approval for PhD studies is contingent upon the applicant's potential to contribute significantly to research capacity and academic leadership in their home country.

Scholarship Categories

The Australia Awards Scholarships have been tailored to cater to a wide array of Indonesian citizens, aiming to study at an Australian university. These scholarships are divided into two primary categories, each designed to address the unique needs and backgrounds of potential applicants: the Targeted and Non-Targeted Categories.

Targeted Category

The Targeted category is specifically designed to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities for all segments of the Indonesian population. It encompasses:

  1. Equity Target Groups (ETG)

  • People with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the opportunities for advancement through education.

  • Women from disadvantaged backgrounds, aiming to empower them through quality higher education.

  • Residents of equity target provinces, including East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, Papua, West Papua, Southwest Papua, South Papua, Highland Papua, Central Papua, West Sulawesi, West Kalimantan, Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and Lampung. This initiative aims to uplift individuals from regions with fewer resources and opportunities.

  1. Government of Indonesia (GoI) Agencies

  • This category is reserved for civil servants from various levels of government, including central, provincial, or local agencies. It's important to note that this does not extend to employees of state-owned enterprises. This focus ensures that those in the public sector are equipped with the knowledge and skills to drive effective governance and development.

Non-Targeted Category

On the other hand, the Non-Targeted category encompasses Indonesian citizens who do not fall into the specific groups mentioned above. This broad category ensures that all individuals have the chance to apply for a scholarship to study at an Australian university, provided they meet the general eligibility criteria.

Who Can Apply?

This prestigious scholarship opens doors for individuals from select countries, focusing on empowering those from developing nations to make significant contributions to their home countries after their studies. For Indonesian citizens, in particular, the scholarship presents a unique opportunity to study in Australia, a country renowned for its exceptional academic institutions and research facilities.

Citizenship and Residence Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be an Indonesian citizen, residing in and applying for the scholarship from Indonesia. This ensures that the scholarship benefits those who are directly contributing to the development of Indonesia upon their return.

  • Applicants must not be married or engaged to a person who holds Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status. This criterion helps maintain the scholarship's focus on fostering development in the participants' home countries.

  • Candidates should not be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently nor applying for another long-term Australia Award if they have not resided outside of Australia for twice the length of their previous stay in Australia. For example, a recipient who has previously studied in Australia for two years under an Australia Award Scholarship must have lived outside Australia for four years before reapplying.

Academic & English Language Requirements

While specific academic requirements may vary depending on the field and level of study (PhD or Masters), all applicants must demonstrate a strong academic background. This includes holding the minimum qualifications required for the program applied for, ensuring that candidates are well-prepared for the rigors of academic study at an Australian university.
